UPDATE 12/20/2020
UCDAVIS has a New Test using CSF from a horse to test for EDM
The sample has to be sent by a vet and a form completed by a vet with symptoms, previous testing eliminations etc. They prefer spinal fluid and serum, but they will also test just the serum.
This page also has a list of references and info on more articles, but they are more directed to a veterinarian. But at least this will give people some ideas to speak with their vets concerning their horses.
As it mentions, in the past the only test was a necropsy. Historically, measuring Vitamin E levels could sometimes be indications of issues but it was not proof positive as some horses with adequate Vitamin E still deteriorated and were eventually determined to have EDM. Administering Natural, liquid Vitamin E to neurologic cases during the months that they would not have adequate source to grass/pasture (the best form) is something simple to do and cannot hurt. Vitamin E testing can also be done at several University Labs. We send that to Michigan State or Cornell.

Eibhleann should reach close to 14.3 hh. She is also a pintaloosa. She was born with snowflakes on her hips. Her Grand dam was a Spotted Gypsy directly from the Hermits lines. Gabriel, Eibhleann's Dam, ended up marbling and mottling around the age of 2. CONFIRMED LP/lp carrier and is nT/TT. She has sclera around her eyes and just the start of mottling on her bottom lip and udder. I'm quite excited to see how she colors out.
Our goal with her is to just start ground working her with obstacles and see how she does. I would like her to be my niece's mount when the time comes. As long as she reaches her expected height, they can compete in the Horse Division in our Open Local shows and 4H, when the time comes.
She has turned out to be one of the smartest babies I have worked with and am very excited for our future together. She is curious and outgoing, but loves to be with people, I couldn't of asked for anything better in such a young horse. I cannot wait start to play.
